It was previously reported that ABC Family has bought the rights to the first film of the hugely popular Hunger Games franchise. However, neither ABC Family or Lionsgate commented about the news at that time.
We learned today that ABC Family acquired the rights to the first two films of the Hunger Games franchise.
ABC Family announced today it has acquired the network television premiere rights for The Hunger Games in a deal with Lionsgate. The announcement comes on the heels of The Hunger Games’ record-shattering weekend debut, with an estimated $155 million at the North American box office this past weekend, the third highest-grossing opening weekend of all time.
The acquisition also includes the rights to Catching Fire, the second movie in the franchise, making ABC Family the basic cable home for the first two movies of The Hunger Gamesfranchise. The films will begin airing on ABC Family in 2014.
