TimeOutChicagoKids.com recentlyspoke Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg, who plays Rue in the movie.

When did you first read The Hunger Games?
I read the books about a year ago, when I was in seventh grade. All the kids in my class were reading them and talking about how good they were, so I thought, “Hey I should try them.” I just tore through them because they’re just so good. I fell in love with Rue right away. I love how musical she is, and how quick and smart she is.

What was your audition like?
To get prepared, my mom took some of my clothes and rolled them in the backyard to get grass stains all over them, and we put twigs in my hair. Gary Ross, the director, was very impressed. He said I had my own hair, makeup and wardrobe department.

What else did you do to convince him you could be Rue?
I just discussed how much I connected with the character. I also told them how I’ve done parkour work, so I have some tree-jumping skills.

Did you do any of the stuntwork in the movie?
I did some stuff. I didn’t have to do any of the hard-core stuff, but I got strapped in my custom harness. I flew around the room and jumped from tree to tree. I loved being in the harness because I felt like Peter Pan. We have some cool scenes where I’m up in the trees with Jennifer.

There’s a key scene in the book where Katniss sings Rue a lullaby. Some readers have been so inspired by that passage, they’ve written their own melodies and uploaded the song to YouTube. What can you tell us about that scene?
On that day [of filming], I actually had the honor of meeting Suzanne Collins, the author. That was incredible. We talked about the scene and how Rue is trying to be brave for Katniss.… It’s really so important to everyone who worked on the movie that it stays true to the books, so that the fans are really happy with it.

Jacqueline Emerson’s upcoming music video “Catch Me If You Can” will be released March 6, 2012.

Hunger Games actress Jackie Emerson was recently interviewed by Seventeen Magazine:

Seventeen: There is so much hype about the movie coming out March 23rd! Do you think it will live up to the books?

Jacqueline Emerson:: Yes, I think the fans will be really happy. I’m a fan and I’m really happy!

17: Reading the books, were you Team Gale or Team Peeta?

JE: I’m Team Katniss! It’s not really a love story. That’s not the focus. The entire time, you’re following the journey of this girl and there’s some love that goes along with it, but that’s not the huge factor in the first book. It’s more of a survival story. That’s why I like it so much.

17: On set, who was the goofiest cast mate?

JE: Jennifer Lawrence. She is so funny! Jack Quaid and Josh Hutcherson are really funny. Everybody had a funny streak. We were constantly laughing. It was great!

17: What about the flirtiest? Who was the flirtiest on set?

JE: Probably Leven. It’s just her personality!

17: What do you like most about Foxface? What personality traits do you admire?

JE: I love that she is so smart and is able to make her way through the games without killing anybody. I think that’s really cool, especially when she’s thrown into this society where that’s what you’re brought up to do.

Hollyscoop caught up with Josh Hutcherson at the premiere for Journey 2 last night, where he talked about his other upcoming project, the The Hunger Games.

“Oh man, I’m excited about it. The Hunger Games is based on the novel series and also stars Jennifer Lawrence. You know, I’m a huge fan of the books and I kind of feel like ‘Journey’ prepared me for it in a way.

Because in ‘Journey’ I’m sort of running around an island and a jungle, trying to survive, and in ‘Hunger Games’, I’m running through a forest trying to survive. So it’s kind of similar on some levels.”
