Can she act?
Casting isn't just a matter of having a person who looks like the character. Now, Jennifer Lawrence may not look like Katniss - she's curvy, round-faced, blond, blue-eyed, pale-skinned, tall, broad-shouldered, athletic... but her magnificent ability, and the fact that she had read the books, made her able to overcome the appearance problem, and make us actually believe she was Katniss. Personally, I find it easier to suspend disbelief when there's a lack of physical resemblance than when the acting is below standard. When I first saw the previews, and saw who was playing her, I said "That's not Katniss Everdeen"... by the time I was a few minutes into the movie, I was thinking of her as Katniss Everdeen, not as Jennifer Lawrence! Sure, before the Capitol fed her up, I'd have preferred her to have looked leaner, and during the arena scenes I'd have preferred her to look dirtier, more battle-scared and generally less like she'd just stepped out of a beauty salon, but there's an audience and purpose thing going on here. It was a 13PG cert movie, that needed to attract a young audience, and gain critical approval on those grounds. A hyper-realistic depiction (a la "Saving Private Ryan") would have meant the movie failed at the box office, and that's an end to the franchise! I think the director and lead did a perfect balancing job, keeping the story true to the spirit of the books without making it too realistically grimy. I caould not guarantee a lesser actress could have pulled it off!
