Chapter Six
When he sees the bakery, Peeta breaks away from me and steps towards it wordlessly. He seems to be in a some sort of state shock and his face holds an expression confusion.
I step forward tentatively, and give his shoulder a squeeze. "Peeta," I begin. He doesn't acknowledge me at all, his eyes are still focused on the freshly painted, new bakery. I rack my brains for something reassuring to say, but all I manage is a weak, "would you like to go in?" I should be ashamed, I am awful at saying the right the right thing. To m surprise though, Peeta doesn't refuse my offer. Instead he reaches for my hand again, and leads my in. Still, he hasn't said a word or even shifted his gaze from the bakery.
The inside of the bakery is nearly identical to it's former appearance other than a few boxes of things that still need to be unpacked. I wath Peeta carefully, waiting for him show some sort of emotion, anything at all. And he sure does.
He looks right into my eyes and speaks, but nothing can prepare me for what he says. "They're really gone, they're all gone." Yes Peeta they're all gone. Just like Prim, Finnick, Rue, Boggs, Madge, Maggs, and my father, I think. Instead, I just embrace him, and whisper the only thing I can think of.
"Yes Peeta, they are gone, but I am right here. And I will stay with you, always." He doesn't respond, but I don't let go. I know that he would do the same for me. We simply stay they clutching each other tighter than we ever have, and silently mourn the loss of his family.
