Spoilers - A behind the scenes conspiracy or my imagination?

Postby deviantd » Wed May 02, 2012 2:19 am

I have a small book club on facebook and we just finished reading the trilogy. While discussing the books (mainly the ending and last book) we started to form an idea out of the things that didn't make since. I haven't been able to find much about this topic, except on one website that listed a few Hunger Games conspiracy theories in brief detail.

If anyone has heard of this before or if there is a discussion about this somewhere please post and let me know.

So anyway here is it. Was Katniss hand picked from the beginning? Of course there are moments that are just a coincidence or help to develop how this conspiracy plays out (like the pin). Things that point to it are:
Cinna designing her costumes the way he did, and the uniforms worn later in 13. - he just happened to request 12 & and then was the one to design the "rebels uniforms"

Picking Prim from the drawing - anyone who knew her knows she would never let her sister go into the games. this gives an uncharismatic character an instant enigma the people will love. she saves her sister.

Why Katniss - I think this is a leap of faith, she is from a district no one pays attention to, but of everyone in that district she had the best chance of actually winning because of her hunting skills.

That every "decision" Kat makes is from some sort of manipulation. She is used and manipulated the entire trilogy.

I'm not sure if it's allowed, but if anyone would like to see how this thought process came about I can post a link to the book club thread (though at the moment you would have to join it to see the post. (our next book will be jane erye in case anyone is wondering lol)

Anyway, I (we) weren't sure if it was my overactive imagination filling in gaps or is this is an actual underlying theme that is getting glanced over. (except possibly places like this)

Oh one more thing, does anyone know if suzanne is going to write any other novels in conection to this trilogy? something from someone else's point of view or giving some behind the scenes information? or if she has given any interviews that give any of this type of info? thanks again

Have you checked out John Granger's website (hogwarts professor)? He delves into the subject in great detail in what he calls "The Pearl Plot".

It's definitely fascinating and I would have loved if some of it would have come to fruition in Mockingjay. In the end I suppose only the author knows. I doubt she'll add to the trilogy in any way although the decision to split MJ into 2 movies may give her space to fill in the blanks a bit.

Thanks for the info. I'm late to the game and the obsession, that surrounds this trilogy. I feel like I'm jumping on the bandwagon (which I hate to do), but this story intrigued me so much I couldn't help it. I'll check out the web site :)

I don't think this can be true, really. In order for Katniss to be picked, she'd have to be significant pre-Hunger Games, and there's nothing really to suggest that anyone knows much about her, except that she's quite introverted at school. In terms of the reaping, there are thousands of kids who could be picked for reaping, and hundreds of those could easily have be put in instead of Katniss as a figurehead for the rebellion. For example, why Katniss rather than Gale? Wouldn't Gale, as more obviously likeable, handsome, equally capable, and actually, more caring about the revolution (Katniss often refers to the time Gale spends when they're hunting discussing the ills of the Capitol) be a more suitable figurehead? On top of that, it wouldn't even be difficult to have chosen him, seeing as his name was already in 42 times. I find it hard to believe that Katniss is the only kid in the whole of Panem who could spark a revolution.

She did not Peeta did. Remember she was not likable - Peeta made her likable. The people feel in love with his love for her. They kept asking about him - wanting to see him. Peeta represented hope - her hope but also the hope of Panem that someone could love like that, a love which was filling. Peeta is like a Christ character - 3 days in the cave and offering his life at the end. I agree - I see conspiracies every where. Never thought of this one - but they do mention that names aren't really random. So if you are Haymitch and you figure out the boy loves the girl - and you pay attention to the boy and figure out he can lead a revolution - then you find out he loves the girl - I suppose that is not far fetched. Gale was just angry - so he looked good on camera - his love came from jealousy, his fight from anger. Peeta rallied a nation to his cause - loving Katniss. So I suppose it could be true. I have thought that at the end when he is in the Capitol he isn't just getting better - after all how could he return to her and just walk away know that just because the war is over no one is safe - his goal was always to keep her safe. Couldn't he have done something while in the Capitol to keep her safe. I don't see Peeta just walking way - this is the guy who volunteer to go in for Haymitch and offered his life for Katniss. So conspiracy - defiantly - exactly what - hard to say.

Well, there's a blast from the past. I will have to check Granger's website out and see what he has to say about this. I enjoyed his analyses of Harry Potter, so I will most likely enjoy reading what he's come up with regarding this series, too. Wow.....never thought I would hear that name again after I jettisoned the HP fandom after Book 6! ;)

Some of his writings on Mockingjay are definitely worth a read. A lot of the literary and spiritual analysis is way over my head though.

FWIW, this is a sort of index to the HG discussions on the Granger site -- lots of interesting ideas:
