Peeta's Bread Knowledge

Postby Archer520 » Thu Dec 01, 2011 4:53 pm

When Katniss and Peeta are at lunch, he describes and teaches her about the other districts' breads. My question is, how did he know? The other districts are supposed to be separate and pretty much top secret. How would he have the knowledge? They wouldnt have had need to make in District 12 where there weren't exactly tourists who'd want it. In Catching Fire, he also asks for samples of cakes to study since he'd never seen them. How did he know the breads then?

I think each district had a set amount of wheat ration for purchase. Why he was hit for a simple fact of burning a couple of loaves. They may have been a way of getting word out to another district in times of need for more like at holidays were it wasn't really in any say so in letting the district have a bigger supply. I don't see the Capitol bunch caring about some holiday around set for some harvest time of theres. He would know bread in what each type made, where cakes was a luxury thing and how the bakers decorate them.

He'd know from watching the hunger games every year. They show off their districts specialty every year when they ride the chariots through the city circle, also Snow would mention the 12 districts in his annual speech

Maybe by watching the games, occasional tributes will get a gift of bread, and the mentor decided on a loaf of bread from their district. Also, Peeta is a baker, so of course he must know about bread :D
FYI: If you like bread, check out my Bread Game in the Hunting Grounds. :D

Good point - he might just pay more attention to the bread in the games over the years. But this post brings up a good point. Wonder if this just slipped by SC or if there really is an explanation. This idea of just noticing the bread in the games does seem to be the best answer.

Well the obvious is that there is a underground bread smuggling operation going on between the districts.

People have been eating bread for yonks with traditions going back for centuries without much changes. Generational bakers like the mellarks would have had traditional recipes passed down from before the dark days. It's nice to know at least one baker survived in D12 to keep the tradition going.

Now, are D13 bread any good or is it something even D13 citizens have to force down?
