Teen.con had a chat with Alexander Ludwig (Cato), Isabelle Fuhrman (Clove), Amandla Stenberg (Rue) about The Hunger Games!
Teen.com: Had you all read the book before the film? Were you Hunger Games fans?
Isabelle: Yeah!
Alexander: There’s a book? *laughs* Definitely, absolutely, we were all huge, huge fans of the book.Teen.com: Did you have favorite characters?
Isabelle: Yes definitely, my favorites were Katniss and Rue cause they’re so relatable and lovable.Teen.com: How was it wanting to kill them?
Isabelle: I mean I always say that you have to love your characters. So I was rereading the book to love one of the characters that’s really a bad character (Clove) and then from there discovering who she was and what made her so terrible and so mentally disturbed. And then from there just kind of doing a lot of character work.Teen.com. Alexander, this is quite a different role for you, compared to Race to Witch Mountain. You’re the bad guy instead of the good guy. What sort of training did you have to go through?
Alexander: Right when I got offered the role of Cato I jumped on the opportunity because like you said, I’ve never really had a chance to play a bad guy and I think that’s always something I’ve really, really wanted to do. Experience that really dark side of a person and whatnot, and Cato is a really twisted individual. We worked just unbelievably hard – physically I wanted Cato to have as big of a physical presence as a mental one in the movie. There was lots of fight training that we had to go through. I worked with a Navy Seal to bulk up. Tons of hand-to-hand combat.
Isabelle: We did a lot of work together, as far as training goes. He was sword and I was knife, so when we were doing sword training and knife training, it was kind of the same.
